Members of the Lions Club of Kanungu on Wednesday afternoon planted trees along the streets of Kihihi Town Council, in an exercise meant to green up the fast growing town council.
The tree planting drive attracted a big number of Lions, town leaders and some residents who came out to support the cause. Leading the guests was the district governor Lion John Byarugaba, who joined Kihihi Town Council Mayor Hon. Rogers Tumwesigye to grace the event.
What made the day different was how each Lion who turned up was given a tree to plant and told to give it a name. Members said this was done so that everyone feels responsible for the tree they planted and can follow up on it later to see if it has grown well.
Former Resident District Commissioner Mugisha Peter also attended the tree planting activity.
Mayor Rogers asked locals to take care of the young trees and stop animals or boda bodas from destroying them.
The Lions Club members said they will keep checking on the trees to make sure they survive.
The Lions Club of Kanungu is part of Lions Clubs International, which carries out different community activities including health camps and environmental work.
