Residents of Kanungu District on Sunday joined the Rotary Cancer Run, rallying behind efforts to raise funds for cancer treatment and support the completion and equipping of the cancer treatment centre at Nsambya Hospital.
The run, held in Kihihi, attracted members of the Rotary Club of Kihihi, Rotary Club of Kanungu, Rotaract Club of Bwindi Nursing School, several other clubs and residents who turned up to support the cause.
Dr Charlotte Aguti, the Executive Director of Bwindi Nursing School, led the participants as the chief runner.
The event was well attended, with residents buying Rotary Cancer Run kits and taking part in the run as a show of support for the fight against cancer.
The funds raised from the activity will be channelled towards the Rotary cancer project at Nsambya Hospital, which seeks to improve access to cancer treatment and related services.
Corporate organisations also supported the event, including Equity Bank Kihihi.
Speaking during the activity, Equity Bank Kihihi Branch Manager Benon said the bank has continued to support causes that have a meaningful impact on communities and encouraged more people to associate with Rotary and support initiatives aimed at addressing challenges affecting communities.
Organisers also used the event to encourage members of the public to prioritise regular cancer screening, noting that early detection remains important in the fight against the disease. There was also free cancer screening today at the venue, Kigezi Education Center.
The annual Rotary Cancer Run is one of Rotary’s major fundraising initiatives in Uganda, bringing together communities, organisations and individuals to raise money for the fight against cancer.
