Former UBC TV Anchor Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma Named Successor to Late Tooro King Oyo

FORT PORTAL, Uganda — Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a former news anchor and editor at Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC) Television, has been designated as the successor to the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, becoming the next king of the Tooro Kingdom.

His selection was formally announced on the evening of September 9, 2026, by leaders of the Babiito royal clan at Karuziika Palace. The resolution was read by Monsignor Isaiah Mayombo before members of the royal clan and a dedicated transition committee.

A 21-member succession committee reached the decision following extensive consultations aimed at identifying a suitable successor to King Oyo, who passed away on August 27, 2026, after nearly three decades on the throne.

Prince Edward Kijanangoma now begins the journey toward his formal enthronement, which will be conducted in accordance with the historical traditions and cultural customs of the Babiito dynasty.

Beyond his royal responsibilities, Kijanangoma is known to many Ugandans through his career in journalism, where he served as a news anchor and editor at UBC TV. His transition from the newsroom to the traditional institution marks a significant change as he prepares to lead one of Uganda’s most respected cultural kingdoms.

Prince Edward Kijanangoma comes from a prominent royal lineage. He is the son of the late Prince Christopher Paul Kijanangoma and the grandson of Sir George David Rukidi Kamurasi III, who ruled Tooro from 1929 to 1965.

The Kijanangoma family has historically played a significant role in Tooro’s royal affairs. Prince Edward previously participated in efforts to bring members of the royal family together during periods of internal disagreements. His cousin, the late Prince David Kijanangoma, also attracted attention in 2015 after raising concerns about aspects of King Oyo’s leadership style.

The selection of Prince Edward comes at a critical moment for the kingdom as it prepares to conclude funeral rites for King Oyo at the Karambi Royal Burial Grounds and begins preparations for a new era under fresh leadership.

The new Omukama is expected to inherit the cultural responsibilities of the Tooro monarchy, including preserving traditions, strengthening unity among the people of Tooro, and maintaining the legacy of the Babiito dynasty.
