Kihihi Town Council Mayor Rogers Tumwesigye has asked Local Government Minister Balaam Barugahara to support efforts to elevate Kihihi from a town council to a municipality, arguing that the fast-growing urban centre now needs a higher level of government services.

Tumwesigye made the request on Tuesday, October 27, during Minister Balaam’s public engagement in Kihihi as part of the government’s anti-corruption and service delivery campaign in Kanungu District.

The mayor told the minister that Kihihi had expanded significantly in recent years and that the growing number of residents and businesses was putting increased demand on public services.

He argued that municipality status would give the urban centre a stronger administrative structure and create room for improved planning and service delivery as Kihihi continues to grow.

Kihihi Town Council was established as a town council in 2005 after the former Kihihi parish was promoted to town-council status. Its development plan noted the town’s growth in trade, commerce and population and identified infrastructure, health, water, electricity and sanitation among its major development priorities.
