Gov’t Gazettes Nyabongo I As King Of Tooro Kingdom

Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, the newly gazetted King of Tooro Kingdom.

Tooro Kingdom has entered a new phase in its royal transition after the Ugandan government formally recognised Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as Omukama.

The government’s decision, which was published in the Uganda Gazette on October 16, gives official recognition to the monarch who was enthroned at Karuzika Palace in Fort Portal on September 29.

Nyabongo’s rise to the throne followed a series of decisions within the kingdom’s traditional leadership.

The Babiito clan selected him on September 9, and the Tooro Kingdom Supreme Council endorsed the choice six days later. His coronation followed on September 29, in a ceremony attended by President Yoweri Museveni.

The government’s gazette notice, published as General Notice No. 2204, formally recognises Nyabongo as Omukama with effect from the coronation date. It was signed by Minister Henry Tumukunde on October 12.

Nyabongo now assumes the role of leading one of Uganda’s historic cultural institutions at a time when the succession has drawn scrutiny from royal family members, legal officials and the wider public.
