Shiye Mining Company, which was licensed to lead mining operations in Kayungwe, Kanungu District, has stepped up preparations ahead of the official opening of mining activities in the area.
Improvements are being made at the site to promote safer, more organised and responsible mining, in line with recommendations from the Ministry.
The preparations follow a recent visit to Kayungwe by Minister of State for Energy and Mineral Development, Phionah Nyamutoro, who directed Shiye Mining Company to put in place a number of measures aimed at improving sanitation, security, safety and the general organisation of the mining site before activities officially resume.
The company was given 21 days to implement the measures.
Among the improvements already being undertaken are the removal of temporary structures, better organisation of the mining area and improvement of sanitation facilities.
The developments are expected to create a more organised environment for miners, workers and members of the surrounding community as Kayungwe prepares for the official opening of mining activities.
Shiye Mining Company has also highlighted community development as part of its plans for the area.
The company has indicated that it is supporting efforts to improve access to clean water and health services, including plans to support the upgrading of Mishenyi Health Centre II to a Health Centre III and the development of a 20-tap gravity-flow water scheme in Kayungwe.
Speaking to the LC1 Chairman of Kayungwe, he confirmed that some toilets have already been constructed in Kayungwe by Shiye to improve sanitation.
The planned improvements come at a time when Kayungwe has attracted big attention following the discovery of gold in the area, with many residents and miners looking to benefit from the emerging mining economy.
