This is a conventional points conversion, not an official UNEB numerical score or a university admission decision.
The Uganda Advanced Certificate of Education (UACE) is the examination taken by students at the end of Senior Six. Candidates normally study three principal subjects, General Paper and either Subsidiary Mathematics or Subsidiary ICT.
The conventional UACE points conversion assigns numerical values to the grades obtained in principal subjects. The three principal subject points are added together. General Paper and the additional subsidiary subject can each contribute one point when passed.
For example, a candidate with A, B and C in the three principal subjects obtains 15 principal points. If the candidate passes General Paper and the additional subsidiary subject, the conventional total becomes 17 out of 20.
UNEB reports examination grades, while universities apply their own admission and subject-weighting rules. The two calculations should not be confused.
The established Uganda UACE grading system uses seven result categories for principal subjects.
| Grade | Points | Classification |
|---|---|---|
| A | 6 | Principal Pass |
| B | 5 | Principal Pass |
| C | 4 | Principal Pass |
| D | 3 | Principal Pass |
| E | 2 | Principal Pass |
| O | 1 | Subsidiary Pass |
| F | 0 | Fail |
These are conventional numerical values used for points calculations. They should not be confused with numerical scores issued directly by UNEB.
An A in a UACE principal subject is worth six points under the conventional university points conversion. It is the highest principal-subject grade.
The conventional maximum UACE points score is 20. A candidate can obtain up to 18 points from three principal subjects, one point from General Paper and one point from Subsidiary Mathematics or ICT.
This assumes that the candidate takes and passes both subsidiary subjects. Candidates with different subject combinations may have a different maximum.
A Principal Pass is a grade from A to E in a principal subject. These grades qualify as passes at principal level.
Grade O is a Subsidiary Pass. It earns one point in the conventional conversion but does not count as a Principal Pass. Grade F is a fail and earns zero points.
The number of Principal Passes is important for university admission. The minimum direct-entry bachelor's degree requirement includes at least two Principal Passes obtained at the same sitting, together with at least five UCE passes. Individual programmes may impose additional conditions.
UACE points and university weighted points are two different calculations. UACE points represent the conventional numerical conversion of examination grades. University weighted points are calculated according to the admission system of a particular institution and programme.
For example, Makerere University uses subject categories such as Essential, Relevant, Desirable and Other. These categories receive different weighting factors under its published admission guidance.
Essential subjects normally require a Principal Pass. An O grade cannot satisfy an Essential-subject Principal Pass requirement.
Admission also depends on the programme, available places, competition, other qualifications and the admission requirements for the relevant academic year.
This Uganda UACE Points Calculator does not claim to predict admission or calculate university-specific weighted points.
Read the Makerere University weighting guidance and check the latest admission documents from your chosen university.
The conventional calculation adds points from three principal subjects, General Paper and Subsidiary Mathematics or ICT. Principal grades convert as A=6, B=5, C=4, D=3, E=2, O=1 and F=0. Each passed subsidiary subject contributes one point.
An A in a principal subject is worth six points.
A B in a principal subject is worth five points.
A C in a principal subject is worth four points.
A D in a principal subject is worth three points.
An E in a principal subject is worth two points and is the lowest Principal Pass grade.
An O is worth one point in the conventional principal-subject conversion. It is a Subsidiary Pass, not a Principal Pass.
The conventional maximum is 20 points: 18 from three principal subjects, one from General Paper and one from Subsidiary Mathematics or ICT.
The NCHE minimum direct-entry bachelor's degree requirement includes at least two Principal Passes obtained at the same sitting and at least five UCE passes. Individual programmes may impose additional requirements.
A Principal Pass is a grade from A to E in a principal subject. An O is a Subsidiary Pass and does not count towards the number of Principal Passes.
A passed General Paper can contribute one point under the conventional university points conversion.
A passed Subsidiary Mathematics result can contribute one point under the conventional conversion.
A passed Subsidiary ICT result can contribute one point under the conventional conversion.
No. O is a Subsidiary Pass. It can contribute one converted point but does not qualify as a Principal Pass.
Universities use UACE grades and converted points as part of their admission selection systems. Some institutions assign additional weights to Essential, Relevant and Desirable subjects.
UACE points are the conventional numerical conversion of examination grades. University weighted points are calculated by multiplying subject grade points by the weights assigned to subjects in a particular programme.
UNEB confirmed in September 2026 that the familiar A, B, C, D, E, O and F result-reporting categories would remain in place for the 2026 UACE examinations despite changes to assessment methods.
